The Undecidable Unconscious

The Undecidable Unconscious: A Journal of Deconstruction and Psychoanalysis is a journal I founded in 2013.  With the help of fellow psychoanalyst-scholars Alan Bass and Jared Russell, we created a forum for those working at the borders of metaphysics and psychoanalysis. The journal’s name refers to my Freudian-Lacanian-Derridean theory of unconscious processes and to Derrida’s thinking about undecidability. The name, then, speaks of psychoanalysis as deconstruction and deconstruction as psychoanalysis and seeks to open onto all fields in which undecidability is at stake.

The Undecidable Unconscious website builds on that foundation, offering a digital, hypertextual, rhizomatic forum for the exploration of psychological health, creativity, and ongoing inquiry that embraces the undecidability of the unconscious. Like the journal, it rejects mastery, certainty, and fixed endpoints, embracing the complexities and contradictions inherent in our lives and relationships and attempts to understand the human psyche.

A Digital Space for Imperfection, Exploration, and Transformation

This is not the work of a self-proclaimed guru or an idealized vision of psychological well-being. Instead, The Undecidable Unconscious begins from a place of imperfection and uncertainty, reflecting the lifelong, evolving process of understanding psychological health. Inspired by Freud’s idea of psychoanalysis as “interminable,” this platform acknowledges there is no ultimate state of being "fully analyzed" or "completely healthy." Psychological health is an ongoing journey—a nonlinear process of reflection, transformation, and sometimes messy progress toward a healthier way of being.

Postmodern, Rhizomatic, and Open to All

The Undecidable Unconscious is a born-digital, rhizomatic multimedia hypertext designed for exploration in multiple ways. Its de-structuring structure mirrors the postmodern and post-psychoanalytic theories of subjectivity it presents: nonlinear, interconnected, and always evolving. Here, the messy complexities of life, love, and care are not problems to be solved but realities to be engaged with.

Inspired by Lacan’s critique of the discourse of the university, which prioritizes mastery and certainty while denying the truth of the unconscious, this platform also interrogates the limits of other discourses—from the master’s illusion of control to the hysteric’s endless questioning and the analyst’s potential neglect of practical realities.

Projects for Beginners and Beyond

Here, you’ll find projects that merge the humanities, psychoanalysis, mental healthcare, and creativity:

  • Reimagining my academic research on Freud, Derrida, and Lacan as an accessible multimedia hypertext.

  • A Dante-inspired graphic novel exploring psychological health, art, and resilience.

  • New experiments that combine deconstruction, psychoanalytic thought, and creative inquiry.

This is a space for beginners in every sense: those willing to approach health, thought, and creativity with curiosity, humility, and openness—a “beginner’s mind.” Whether you’re a scholar, artist, clinician, or simply curious, this site invites you to join the ongoing conversation about what it means to live, thrive, and embrace the undecidable.

An Invitation to Learn, Unlearn, and Discover

At its heart, The Undecidable Unconscious is about learning, unlearning, and discovering together. It is a space to question, create, and connect—where the boundaries between disciplines dissolve, and the messy realities of human experience come alive. Welcome to this exploration of psychological health, creativity, and the intersections of thought and care. Welcome to The Undecidable Unconscious.
